What is an intersection?
An intersection is a place on the road where the intersection, connection, or bifurcation of roads with a carriageway occurs, along with the surfaces formed by such intersections, connections, or bifurcations. It is worth emphasizing that not every road connection is formally recognized as an intersection – connections of a road with a hard surface to a gravel road, to an internal road, or access to a facility (e.g., parking lot) are not included.
Current legal definition
According to the regulations in force since 2022, an intersection is a part of the road that is the connection of roads or the carriageway of one road at the same level, except for the connection of a road with a hard surface to a road with a gravel surface or to an internal road. This means that both classic road intersections and places where the carriageways of one road merge or bifurcate are intersections.
Why are intersections important?
- These are places where vehicle traffic paths intersect, which increases the risk of collisions.
- They require drivers to exercise special caution and knowledge of right-of-way rules.
- Many drivers do not always correctly recognize whether a given place is an intersection, which can lead to unintentional violation of regulations (e.g., no-passing, parking, or speed limit restrictions).
Types of intersections found in Poland
| Type of intersection | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| T-shaped intersection | One road ends at another, forming a T letter. |
| Y-shaped intersection | Roads bifurcate at an angle, resembling the letter Y. |
| X-shaped intersection | Two roads intersect at a right angle. |
| Roundabout intersection (traffic circle) | Traffic around a central island, often with enforced speed limits. |
Safety at intersections
Intersections are particularly dangerous places on the road. This is where accidents most often occur, so every driver should:
- Reduce speed before entering the intersection.
- Observe road signs, traffic lights, and other road users.
- Signal the intention to change direction.
- Comply with right-of-way rules.
Summary
Knowledge of the definition of an intersection and the rules applicable within it is the basis for safe travel on Polish roads. In subsequent posts, we will discuss in detail the types of intersections and the right-of-way rules that apply there.
