Horizontal road markings (P)

Horizontal markings complement vertical signs and traffic lights. This catalogue helps you recognise arrows, chevrons, hatching, pedestrian crossings and other pavement symbols that appear in official exam questions.

P-1	Dashed single line	The P-1 sign is a dashed single line in which the dashes are shorter than or equal to the gaps. It delineates traffic lanes. If the line has double width and the dashes are equal to the gaps, it additionally indicates that the lane is: a slow lane, ending or intended exclusively for vehicles leaving to another road or carriageway.
P-2	Solid single line	The P-2 sign is a solid single line. It separates traffic lanes in the same direction and indicates a prohibition of driving onto and crossing the line.
P-3	One-sided crossing line	The P-3 sign is a one-sided crossing line. It indicates a prohibition of driving onto and crossing the line from the traffic lane adjacent to the solid line. The exception is returning to the lane occupied before overtaking.
P-4	Solid double line	The P-4 sign is a solid double line. It separates traffic lanes in opposite directions and indicates a prohibition of driving onto and crossing the line.
P-5	Dashed double line	The P-5 sign is a dashed double line, placed on both sides of a traffic lane between intersections. It indicates a lane with a variable direction of traffic, the opening and closing of which is carried out by means of light signals of the S-4 traffic light.
P-6	Warning line	The P-6 sign is a warning line in which the dashes are longer than the gaps. It separates traffic lanes and warns of approaching a line over which crossing is prohibited, or of a particularly dangerous place.
P-7a	Dashed edge line	The P-7a sign is a dashed edge line. It delineates the edge of the carriageway. On such a section of road, leaving and entering the carriageway is permitted and stopping on the shoulder is permitted.
P-7b	Solid edge line	The P-7b sign is a solid edge line. It delineates the edge of the carriageway, and on the section marked with this sign leaving and entering the carriageway and stopping on the shoulder are not permitted.
P-8a	Straight-ahead directional arrow	The P-8a sign is a straight-ahead directional arrow. It means that driving from the traffic lane is permitted only in the direction indicated by the arrow. A combination of the symbols P-8a, P-8b or P-8c indicates the possibility of driving in several directions. A directional arrow permitting a left turn in the far-left lane also means the possibility of making a U-turn, unless this is prohibited by the sign B-23 or by S-3 traffic light.
P-8b	Directional arrow for turning	The P-8b sign is a directional arrow for turning. It means that driving from the traffic lane is possible only in the direction indicated by the arrow. A combination of the symbols P-8a, P-8b or P-8c permits traffic in multiple directions. An arrow permitting a left turn in the far-left lane also means the possibility of making a U-turn, unless this is prohibited by the sign B-23 or by the S-3 traffic light.
P-8c	Lane selection arrow – U-turn	The P-8c sign is a lane selection arrow – U-turn. It indicates that driving from the traffic lane is permitted only in the direction indicated by the arrow. A combination of the symbols P-8a, P-8b or P-8c permits the possibility of driving in several directions. A left-turn arrow in the far-left lane also permits making a U-turn, unless this is prohibited by the sign B-23 or by the S-3 traffic light.
P-9	Guiding arrow to the left	The P-9a sign is a guiding arrow to the left. It indicates the obligation to move into the adjacent traffic lane shown by the arrow. This does not apply to drivers for whom the further section of this lane is intended.
P-9b	Guiding arrow to the right	The P-9b sign is a guiding arrow to the right. It requires moving into the adjacent traffic lane indicated by the arrow. It does not include drivers for whom the further section of the lane is intended.
P-10	Pedestrian crossing	The P-10 sign indicates a pedestrian crossing . This is a place designated for crossing the carriageway.
P-11	Cyclist crossing	The P-11 sign indicates a cyclist crossing . This is a place designated for crossing the carriageway by bicycles.
P-12	Line of absolute stopping – stop	The P-12 sign is a line of absolute stopping – stop. It indicates the place where the vehicle must stop in connection with the vertical signs B-20 or B-32. The stop must be made so that the entire vehicle is before the line.
P-13	Conditional stop line made of triangles	The P-13 sign is a conditional stop line made of triangles. It indicates the stopping place in order to give way resulting from the vertical sign A-7. The vehicle should stop so that it is entirely before the line.
P-14	Conditional stop line made of rectangles	The P-14 sign is a conditional stop line made of rectangles. It indicates the place where the vehicle must stop at an intersection, before a pedestrian crossing or a traffic light.
P-15	Yield triangle	The P-15 sign is a yield triangle. It confirms that the entrance from a subordinate road is signed with the vertical sign A-7 – “give way”. At the same time, it warns of approaching a road with right of way.
P-16	STOP marking	The P-16 sign is the “STOP” marking. It is used additionally in combination with the vertical sign B-20 STOP or with the line P-12 – line of absolute stopping, to indicate more clearly the obligation to stop.
P-17	Stop line for public transport	The P-17 sign is a stop line for public transport. It designates a section of road intended for a stop and indicates a prohibition on stopping for vehicles other than public transport vehicles.
P-18	Parking space	The P-18 sign is a parking space. It indicates the manner of parking vehicles and at the same time prohibits stopping next to the designated place.
P-19	Line marking a parking lane	The P-19 sign is a line marking a parking lane. It indicates a place on the carriageway intended for parking vehicles.
P-20	Box	The P-20 sign is the so-called “box”. It indicates a parking space intended exclusively for specified vehicles, determined by the competent administrative authority. Parking of other vehicles is prohibited.
P-21	Excluded area	The P-21 sign is an excluded area. It indicates a part of the carriageway excluded from vehicle traffic, on which movement is not allowed.
P-22	BUS	The P-22 sign is the “BUS” marking. It informs that the carriageway lane is intended exclusively for public transport vehicles (e.g. buses).
P-23	Bicycle	The P-23 sign is the bicycle symbol. It indicates that the road or carriageway lane is intended exclusively for single-track bicycle traffic.
P-24	Space for a vehicle of a disabled person	The P-24 sign indicates a space for a vehicle of a disabled person. A parking space with this marking is reserved exclusively for: a vehicle of a disabled person, a vehicle driven by a person transporting a disabled person, or a vehicle belonging to an institution providing care, rehabilitation or education for persons with significant mobility limitations.
P-25	Speed bump	The P-25 sign is a speed bump. It indicates a raised portion on the carriageway intended to reduce vehicle speed and improve traffic safety.
