Traffic signals (S)
Traffic lights use unique symbols for trams, cyclists or reversible lanes. This chapter explains what each combination means and how it affects priority when multiple signals operate at the same intersection.

Traffic lights with signals for directing traffic | The S-1 traffic light gives the basic light signals for directing traffic. Light signals:
Outside intersections, the signal may display only red and green lights, e.g. at road narrowings. |
| S-2 |
|
Traffic light with a signal permitting turning in the direction indicated by an arrow | The S-2 traffic light displays a red light with a green arrow. This means that the driver may turn in the direction indicated by the arrow, provided that the driver stops before the signal and does not impede other traffic. If the arrow indicates to the left, it also permits a U-turn, unless this is prohibited by the sign B-23. |
| S-3 |
|
Directional traffic light | The S-3 (directional) traffic light gives signals exclusively for drivers travelling in the direction indicated by the arrow. Green light means that, in that direction, there is no conflict with other road users. In the case of traffic lights for a left turn, they do not always have to be placed on the right-hand side of the road. |
| S-3a |
|
Directional traffic light for straight ahead and left | The S-3a traffic light indicates the direction of travel straight ahead and left. The light signals apply exclusively to vehicles travelling in the direction of the arrows. Green light confirms the absence of conflict with other road users. Directional traffic lights controlling a left turn may not be positioned on the right-hand side of the carriageway. |
| S-3b |
|
Directional traffic light for straight ahead and right | The S-3b traffic light indicates the direction of travel straight ahead and right. The light signals apply exclusively to vehicles travelling in the direction of the arrows. Green light confirms the absence of conflict with other road users. |
| S-3c |
|
Directional traffic light for straight ahead | The S-3c traffic light indicates the direction of travel straight ahead. The light signals apply exclusively to vehicles travelling in the direction of the arrows. Green light confirms the absence of conflict with other road users. |
| S-3d |
|
Directional traffic light for turning right | The S-3d traffic light indicates the direction of travel to the right. The light signals apply exclusively to vehicles travelling in the direction of the arrows. Green light confirms the absence of conflict with other road users. |
| S-3e |
|
Directional traffic light for turning left | The S-3e traffic light indicates the direction of travel to the left. The light signals apply exclusively to vehicles travelling in the direction of the arrows. Green light confirms the absence of conflict with other road users. |
| S-3f |
|
Directional traffic light for turning left permitting a U-turn | The S-3f traffic light indicates the direction of travel to the left, as well as for vehicles making a U-turn. The light signals apply exclusively to vehicles travelling in the direction of the arrows. Green light confirms the absence of conflict with other road users. Directional traffic lights for a left turn may be positioned outside the right-hand side of the carriageway. |
| S-3g |
|
Directional traffic light for U-turning vehicles | The S-3g traffic light is intended exclusively for vehicles making a U-turn. The light signals apply exclusively to vehicles travelling in the direction of the arrows. Green light confirms the absence of conflict with other road users. Directional traffic lights for a left turn may be positioned outside the right-hand side of the carriageway. |
| S-3h |
|
Directional traffic light for turning left and right | The S-3h traffic light indicates directions to the left and to the right. The light signals apply exclusively to vehicles travelling in the direction of the arrows. Green light confirms the absence of conflict with other road users. |
